Airplanes ![]()
I've always liked airplanes. Growing up, Dad worked for NORTHWEST ORIENT so we travelled a lot, Europe, Yugoslavia, England, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, as well as much of the U.S. I'm not as avid a flyer now as I once was(now I prefer train travel), but I'm still fascinated by airplanes, especially older props and all 4 engine jetliners.
Wendy & I enjoyed a trip to Italy and London in May 2003, but the flights over and back were not all that comfortable in coach. A full 747 is not particularly comfortable anyway, but the cheapest prices are the worst seats. You certainly get what you pay for.
In 2013 my boss and I had a 3 day group meeting in Dubai, and flew an Emirates 777 on a 14 hour flight(each way) in economy. We sat in the back of the plane where we had only 2 seats instead of 3 so it was "relatively" comfortable. Overall, the flights weren't bad, but it was very hot in Dubai, high 90's or 100's.
In 2016 my boss sent me alone to Bangkok for 5 days for the same group meeting. I flew via Taipei on an EVA 777 going over and 747 coming back. I was in their upgraded "economy plus" which had slightly more legroom and the flying was great. Bangkok was very hot and humid. 4 min video on YouTube.
In 2017 Wendy and I were invited by one of my customers to join them in their annual xmas party in Costa Rica. They do this every year as a company reward for doing good business. Always some place warm. They paid for everything, although we stayed an add'l 2 days on our own after they left which we paid for. Flying Delta down and back via Atlanta worked fine, except on the return I caught a cold the day we left due to heat and humidity there and transitioning in and out of air conditioning. There are five videos posted on my YouTube channel.
2 weeks after we got back, we turned around and flew back to Atlanta and then to Aiken SC to see Karen and David for Christmas week. Fortunately I got over my cold in time. There are 3 videos on my YouTube channel. In 2018 my customer again invited us to their xmas party, this time in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Another Delta adventure via Atlanta. Again they paid for everything. Flying was good, and the weather was very comfortable, like Hawaii. Steady low-mid 80's regardless of weather.
Finally in 2019 I flew to Siem Riep Cambodia for 4 days for another work meeting. This time via Hong Kong. Took a Cathay Pacific Airbus A350 to HK in their "economy plus" and I was not impressed. Legroom was ok, but flight was just too full. Had a Cathay Dragon A321 from HK to Siem Riep, and flying home on an A320 Siem Riep to HK, and Cathay Pacific 777 to San Francisco, then Alaska 737 to Seattle. All flights coming home were great. 13 min video on YouTube.
